High-speed signal processing using electro-optic modulators with polarization reversal structures

(in English) We found that impulse responses of optical phase modulation in traveling-wave electrode electro-optic modulators with polarization-reversed structures correspond to patterns of the polarization-reversed structures. By utilizing the interesting characteristics, new optical functional devices with arbitrary impulse responses are obtainable. Based on this technology, we propose new pre-equalization devices for the compensation for the optical signal distortion caused by chromatic dispersion in optical fibers. The operation speed of the proposed devices can be set over 100Gbps, which might exceed the speed limitation in the digital equalization technique by use of A/D converters and digital processors. In this report, the operational principle, analysis, and device design for the compensation for the signal distortion by fiber chromatic dispersion are presented.
