The interference rejection combining (IRC) receiver, which can suppress inter-cell interference, is effective in improving the cell edge user throughput. The IRC receiver is typically based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criteria, which requires highly accurate channel estimation and covariance matrix estimation that includes the inter-cell interference. As a covariance matrix estimation scheme, the downlink reference signals (RSs) based scheme was proposed. In this scheme, the covariance matrix only including the interference and noise can be estimated by subtracting the replica symbols of the serving cell from the received RS signals. When the transmission modes using the cell-specific RS (CRS) in LTE/LTE-Advanced are assumed, the property of the non-precoded CRS is different from that of the precoded data signals. From this different property, assuming the CRS-to-CRS collision among the serving and interfering cells, the covariance matrix estimation accuracy is affected. Therefore, this paper investigates this impact when both of closed and open-loop MIMO system in LTE/LTE-Advanced are assumed. The results of simulations assuming two transmitter and receiver antenna branches show that there is the impact of the CRS-to-CRS collision especially for the closed-loop MIMO system. However, the IRC receiver can improve the user throughput by exceeding 20% compared to that of the conventional maximal ratio combining (MRC) receiver under the simulation assumptions in this paper even when the CRS-to-CRS collision is assumed. |
