Channel Block Diagonalization using the Second-Order Statistics of Multiuser MIMO Communication Channels

(in English) This report proposes a block diagonalization (BD) method that does not require feedback of channel state information (CSI) by using the second-order statistics of the channel for multiuser MIMO mobile communications. In the multiuser MIMO, the BD precoding is one of the most promising techniques to suppress co-channel interference among users as major impairment. Using CSI, the BD precoding multiplies a transmitted signal vector by a precoding matrix so that the equivalent channel matrix can be block-diagonalized. Thus, the BD precoding requires feedback of CSI in the case of frequency division duplex (FDD) systems. Conversely, the proposed BD precoding estimates the second-order statistics of the channel from the average and covariance of incidence angles of propagation paths, and thus does not need CSI feedback. Specifically, on the assumption that an incidence angle distribution in the uplink channel is the same as that in the downlink channel, the proposed scheme estimates the autocorrelation matrix of the downlink from the average and covariance of incidence angles in the uplink. Since the proposed scheme uses the estimate of the autocorrelation matrix of the downlink, it performs eigenvalue decomposition of the estimated autocorrelation matrix whereas the conventional BD precoding performs singular value decomposition of the channel matrix. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, computer simulations are conducted. It is shown that the proposed scheme, which does not need CSI feedback, is little inferior in the channel capacity to the conventional BD precoding that requires CSI feedback.
