Depolarization-induced crosstalk in polarization-multiplexed transmission and its impact on ultrahigh-speed optical transmission

(in English) Ultrashort optical pulses such as used in a single-channel Terabit/s OTDM transmission suffers from significant transmission impairments due to second-order PMD, i.e., signal depolarization due to frequency dependence of a principal state of polarization, even when the first-order PMD is completely compensated. In particular, in polarization-multiplexed transmission, depolarization leads to a complicated form of inter-polarization crosstalk, which prevents one from complete separation of the two channels. In this paper, we shall present an analytical expression and experimental demonstration of depolarization-induced crosstalk in polarization-multiplexed transmission caused by second-order PMD. It is found that the crosstalk depends on the fourth power of the bandwidth and the square of distance.
