MMSE Precoding using the Second-Order Statistics of Channels for Multiuser MIMO Communications

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This report proposes a minimum mean-square error (MMSE) precoding method using the second-order statistics for multiuser MIMO mobile communications. In the multiuser MIMO, the MMSE precoding is one of the most promising techniques to suppress co-channel interference among users as major impairment. The MMSE precoding multiplies a transmitted signal vector by a modified pseudo-inverse of the channel matrix for suppressing the co-channel interference, and requires feedback of channel state information (CSI) in the case of frequency division duplex (FDD) systems. Conversely, the proposed MMSE precoding estimates the second-order statistics of the channels from the average and covariance of incidence angles of propagation paths, and thus does not need CSI feedback. Specifically, on the assumption that an incidence angle distribution in the uplink channel is the same as that in the downlink channel, the proposed scheme estimates the autocorrelation matrix of the downlink from the average and covariance of incidence angles in the uplink. Using the estimate of the autocorrelation matrix of the downlink, the proposed scheme controls directivity of transmit antennas so that the main beam and nulls can be turned toward desired and other user terminals, respectively. Under the condition of quasi-static frequency flat channels with three transmit antennas and two user terminals employing one receive antenna, computer simulations show that the proposed scheme, which does not need CSI feedback, is little inferior in BER performance to the conventional MMSE precoding that requires CSI feedback.
