Color Extraction for a Book Cover Image Reflecting Readers' Impressions

(in English) Book cover images give users not only impressions of contents intuitively but also clues for search and browsing before or after buying books. In this research, we proposed a color extraction method as the first step of automatically creating book cover images reflecting readers' impressions. We constructed a database focused on the relationships between adjectives and colors and extracted colors from contents and reviews. In an experiment for 20 people, we gave a task of writing a review and drawing a book cover image. We confirmed that colors extracted by this method had higher consistency with colors in book cover images drawn by participants than colors in published covers, especially for novels without any relation to the amount of text.
