In This paper describes a newly developed triple power mode power amplifier for W-CDMA handset applications. The amplifier uses our proposed output circuit without switch, bypass circuit to reduce the number of bypass switch and switching feedback functions for first amplifier which are effective in realizing high efficiency operation and good receive band noise at the high power mode compared with conventional stage-bypass power amplifier. While satisfying adjacent channel power ratio of less than -40 dBc under the measurement condition of a 1.95 GHz W-CDMA(R99) modulated signal and a 3.4 V supply voltage, our prototype amplifier achieves a 28.25 dBm high output power (Po) with power added efficiency (PAE) as high as 40% at the high power mode, 17.0 dBm of Po with 23% of PAE at the middle power mode, and 7.0 dBm with 13% in the low power mode. Due to the switching feedback function, the amplifier can also achieve good receive band noise characteristics of -136 dBm/Hz (190 MHz offset) at 28.25 dBm of Po. |
