An evaluation method for the stretching of the chest observed in baseball pitching

(in English) In baseball pitching, the pitcher's trunk is known to have an important role for conveying the movement energy from the lower limb to the upper limb. In coaching for the trunk motion achieving such role, a term "the stretching of the chest" is used frequently. Its kinematic features, however, has yet to be clarified quantitatively. To clarify "the stretching of the chest" in a scientific sense, we have developed a novel parameter S, which was defined from the positions of several skin markers mounted on the chest and the back. Our preliminary study revealed that the value of S depends primarily on the horizontal abduction of the upper extremity, which is a motion for stretching the chest. Then, in this paper, we applied it to the analysis of baseball pitching in an attempt to evaluate its efficiency in baseball coaching. Empirical results employing three skillful players and three beginners suggested that parameter S has a possibility of analyzing "the stretching of the chest" quantitatively in terms of both time-varying features and kinetic chain to the trunk and the upper extremity.
