Automatic Decision Method of Threshold for Blink Detection Using the Area of Iris

(in English) The blink has relevance to the cognitive process, fatigue and the consciousness level. Therefore, the real-time blinks detection is important to estimate the degree of fatigue, consciousness level etc. In the present study, the blink is detected by measuring the area of iris. In the method, it is judged that the eye is closed when the area of the iris is below the threshold. However, the false detection of the blink increases due to the variation of the area of iris in open eyes because the threshold for blink detection is constant. To overcome this problem, the automatic decision method of the threshold for blink detection was proposed. The threshold is obtained from the average and the standard deviation of the area of iris in the state of open eye. The experimental result showed that the blinks were appropriately detected by sequentially updating the threshold for blink detection with optimal parameter values.
