A capability to quickly assess the structural integrity of buildings following large earthquakes contributes greatly to smooth recovery of urban communities from the disaster. In Japan, registered structural engineers volunteer to go from building to building and inspect the safety of affected buildings, which results in taking a considerable amount of time. In addition, it is not easy to examine the damage in primary structural systems, which are normally covered with finishing materials, from buildings’ facades. To that extent, the implementation of structural health monitoring (SHM) system, which can autonomously assess the damage state of buildings using permanently installed sensors, are desirable for accelerating the damage screening process after earthquake events. In this paper, we introduce a damage detection system developed specifically for steel structures using a pattern classifier. |
