Characteristics Prediction of Synaptic Modification in the Hippocampal CA1 Network by Mutual information maximization

(in English) We employ a top-down approach to finding optimal neural implementations for executing a computation of the hippocampal CA1 network considered to function as a hetero-associative memory, and giving an implementation
of computational roles of spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP).
First, hypothesizing that the hippocampal CA1 network computationally works as the hetero-associative memory, we formulate a minimum model of memory functions as a phase reduction model consisting of a STDP window function and a phase response curve (PRC). Next, we analytically derive the mutual information between a stored phase memory pattern and a network output. By maximizing the mutual information, we search pairs of STDP window functions and PRCs optimally functioning as the hetero-associative memory.
Here, we use PRCs of the hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons recorded in vitro, and under the constraint of measured PRCs, we search a set of optimal STDP window functions. A set of window functions we obtained qualitatively conform with various types of STDP reported previously.
