Three-Dimensional Loudspeaker Arrangement for Creating Sound Envelopment

(in English) The multichannel audio formats whose loudspeaker arrangements are vertically expanded to improve the spatial impression have recently been proposed. This paper discusses the relationship between the horizontal and vertical interval between loudspeakers and the spatial impression, in order to investigate the requirement of the multichannel audio format composed of three-dimensional loudspeaker arrangement. First, the 13 loudspeakers (15° intervals) were placed in a semicircle above the listener’s ear height. The listeners evaluated the spatial uniformity of white noise reproduced by loudspeakers arranged at equal intervals of from 15° to 180°. The result showed that the sound reproduced by the loudspeakers arranged with vertical intervals of less than 45° were provided spatially uniform. Second, the 24 loudspeakers (15° intervals) were placed in three horizontal circles positioned in elevation angles 45°, 0°, -30°, respectively. The listeners evaluated the sound envelopment of white noise reproduced by loudspeakers arranged at equal intervals of from 15° to 120°. The result showed that the sound reproduced by the loudspeakers arranged with horizontal intervals of less than 45° can provide sound envelopment.
