[Invited Talk] Nonlinear Dynamics of Voice Production -- From voice pathology, singing voice to bioacoustics --

(in English) oice production is mainly composed of two parts: (a) laryngeal source produced by vocal fold vibrations and (b) acoustic filtering produced by supraglottal vocal tract. Since acoustic property of the vocal tract filter can be well described by a linear predictive model, the voice production is often considered as a linear system. The vocal folds vibrations are, however, an inherently nonlinear process, which gives rise to subharmonics, quasi-periodic oscillations, chaos, and variety of bifurcation phenomena under some conditions. For standard speech analysis, it is usually that the source and filter are mutually independent. However, in an extreme condition, e.g., in singing voice, such independence is broken and various levels of source-filter interaction can be observed. In the present talk, we start from the fundamentals of voice production and overview the nonlinear phenomena arise in the voice production. As applications, voice instability in pathological voice, bifurcations in register transition, and source-filter interaction in bioacoustics are described.
