Direction Perception of an Approaching Object Using a Vibrotactile Display

(in English) Recently, studies presenting information of direction or environment by using vibrotactile sensation have been conducted. We focus on the presentation of the surrounding environment information, and we are considering the system to present ambient information behind a person in order to avoid dangerous situations. We are also considering to apply the system to inform a driver of risks by detecting possible danger in the rear. When performing the information presentation using a seat-type vibrotactile display, the stimulation area is limited. In order to examine the proper position of the vibrator when designing a vibrotactile display, we examined how precisely subjects can discriminate the object direction by vibratory stimulation to the back.
