This paper presents a design methodology of an H-plane waveguide N-way power divider/combiner constructed by serially connecting N-1 directional couplers in order of coupling coefficient of $10\log_{10}N$[dB]. For realization of a compact structure capable of dividing equal powers in the same direction in the H-plane, compact H-plane directional couplers with similar configuration having each desired coupling coefficient are required. In this paper, we utilize H-plane waveguide cruciform couplers which are marked by very compact and simple structure. However, since they are not applicable to the present circuit system as they stand, it is required that a coupled power to an output port crossing at right angles to an input port is weaker than another ahead coupling port by devising the circuit configuration. First, we design a five-way power divider/combiner by using four successfully optimized directional couplers, and obtain a good performance that a bandwidth for a return loss better than 18 dB is about 9.0 %, and in the same operation band a power division unbalance stays within ±0.7 dB. However, since the bandwidth of the couplers reduces as the coupling becomes weaker, the performance of the power divider/combiner deteriorates with increasing the number of output port. Next, therefore, we try to widen the bandwidth of the directional couplers, and successfully realize a relatively wide bandwidth of about 13 dB coupling coefficient. Finally, we design a five- and a ten-way power dividers/combiners using the band-broadened directional couplers. As a result, bandwidths for input-port return loss and isolation among the output ports better than 20 dB are about 9.7% and 10% for the five- and ten-way dividers, respectively, though the unbalance of power division becomes larger at the higher frequencies. If an unbalance of power division is allowed within ±1.0dB, we can obtain the bandwidth of about 8.6% and 7.1%, respectively. |
