This paper presents a new method for enhancing bandwidths of a circularly polarized microstrip-fed L-slot antenna by using a metamaterial reflective surface (MRS). The prototype antenna has an increased impedance bandwidth (ZBW) of over 90% (330 MHz to 650 MHz), axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of over ten times of the conventional CP antennas (40 MHz to 400 MHz) and gain of over 7 dBi, which covers the IEEE standards 802.11b/g and WiMAX. The radiation pattern of the proposed antenna is also unidirectional which a good succession between simulated and measured results is executed. The MRS is likely a thin antenna with a cavity height of λ0 /16 at the center frequency of 2.5 GHz. Moreover, the proposed antenna is low-profile and low-cost which the overall dimensions are only 0.9λ0 × 0.9λ0 × 0.0825λ0 (108 × 108 × 9.9 mm3). |
