Connection between Multi-Core Fiber and Fan-out

(in English) Multi-core fiber (MCF) that has plurality of cores in one fiber is one of the promising candidate to cope with exponentially increasing transmission capacity. To achieve practical use of MCF, fan-out that allows each core of MCF to be connected into individual single core fibers are indispensable. We developed the fan-out with 45μm fiber bundle. Thin-cladding fibers with highly accurate diameter were realized by chemical etching technique and were closely packed together in a ceramic ferrule to correspond with the MCF’s core layout. We installed the fan-out and MCF to FC connector housings, and confirmed that coupling loss was lower than 0.7dB and crosstalk was lower than -45dB. We also achieved higher than 50dB return loss across all the cores. This result means stable physical-contact between the fan-out and MCF.
