Deformation of Brillouin gain spectrum by sinusoidal-like strain distribution

(in English) As the first step, to apply fiber optic strain measurement based on the strain dependence of the Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) frequency shift for the monitoring of ring structures such as tunnels, the BGS shape deformed by a sinusoidal-like strain distribution (SSD) is investigated theoretically and experimentally. This is a typical non-uniform strain distribution produced in a ring and affects the strain measurement accuracy. The SSD produced in the ring is analyzed mechanically, and then, the BGS under the SSD is obtained numerically, considering the characteristics of the BGS and the BGS observation conditions. The SSD is formed experimentally in an optical fiber attached to a ring with a diameter of 2 m by applying a unidirectional load to the ring, and the BGSs of the fiber are observed. The results confirmed that the deformed BGS shapes obtained by calculation agree well with those observed. In addition, the deformation characteristics and mechanism of BGSs caused by the SSD and BGS observation conditions are also considered. This result enables the prediction of the deformed BGS shape and the analysis of the strain measurement error resulting from the SSD.
