Survey on the Reading of Radicals of Chinese Characters

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) To find the prevalence rate of readings of radicals of Chinese characters, we conducted a survey in which participants were presented with 214 radicals of Chinese characters and asked to answer their readings. 108 people with various ages and academic backgrounds participated in this survey. Readings appearing in popular kanji dictionaries were used as correct answers. The average correct rate was as low as 26.9%. Two factors affecting the correct rate were explored: correct rates of radicals which are to be learned in elementary schools were higher than those of other radicals; correct rates of radicals which appear in Kanji Characters in Common Use (Joyo Kanji) were higher than those of other radicals.
