Noise reduction method for coronary CT using padding images

(in English) When we obtain a coronary CT image, some devices are necessary to reduce blurs due to cardiac pulsation. In general, a coronary CT image is scanned at mid-diastolic phase during cardiac phase using an ECG gating. As the best phase for diagnosis is different with each person, temporarily abundant scan data called “padding” are usually acquired. A final image for diagnosis is reconstructed by selecting the best temporal data during the “padding”. In this research, we propose a noise reduction method for coronary CT images using images reconstructed from unused padding data.
In our method, we reduce noises by averaging some images reconstructed from unused padding data. We avoid image blurring by applying image registration technique before the averaging. Our new technique achieved 18% reduction of image noise in an experiment using pulsated phantom at 40 bpm of heart rate; it might reduce 27% of X-ray tube current. We concluded that our new methods could reduce image noise without sacrificing anatomical details in cardiac CT imaging.
