Auditory stimulus enhances visual detection or identification performance when presented with visual target in spatio-temporal synchronization. Thus, audio-visual integration is regulated by both of spatial and temporal processing. It has been reported that attention can enhance object representation when visual spatial-temporal information integrates with auditory ones. In the present study, we examined the relationship between audio-visual integration and hemispheric asymmetry of attention by measuring decreases in attentional blink effect caused by simultaneous presentation of auditory stimuli in the left and right visual fields. The results indicated that auditory stimuli improved identification performance for linguistic visual stimuli in the right visual field. In contrast, auditory stimuli facilitated the performance for non-linguistic visual stimuli in both visual fields. According to previous studies, the left hemispheric has reported to be responsible for attentional processing only in the right visual field, while right hemispheric responsible for attention in both visual fields. The results of the present study suggest that auditory stimuli presented simultaneously with visual stimuli may modulate hemispheric functions depending on dominancy of attentional control. |
