Performance Evaluation of Adaptive Equalization for MIMO Differential Encoded GMSK Signal Affected by Quantization Noise

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The authors have proposed a constant envelope modulation (CEM) system with a low resolution analog–to-digital converter (ADC) on the receiver side. The proposed CEM system can use a power-efficient nonlinear poweramplifier on the transmitter side. Moreover, power consumption at the analog devices is effectively reduced by employing a low resolution ADC. However, the received signal is seriously affected by severe quantization error by a low resolution ADC. Therefore, BER performance of CEM system is degraded. To solve these problems, we have proposed a modified Viterbi Equalization (VE) that estimates both intersymbol interference and quantization noise and proved that the proposed modified VE improve bit error rate (BER) performance of differential encoded minimum shift keying (MSK) signal affected by quantization noise due to one bit resolution ADC. In this paper, we extend the modified VE to Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) Differential encoded Gaussian MSK (D-GMSK) systems and evaluate BER performance in 2x2 MIMO channel. Computer simulation results show that the proposed scheme effectively improves BER performance of MIMO D-GMSK compared to case without quantization noise estimation in five-path Rayleigh fading channels.
