The development and evaluation of the study support system using a portable information device

(in English) This article describes a mobile study support system that students can access through a mobile telephone network to review class lectures, which can be done by solving problems on a portable information device. By using this system, students can review class lecture content at their convenience. To clarify the educational effects of using this system, we analyzed the students’ usage records, scores on regular examinations, and subjective evaluations regarding the system that they gave via a questionnaire. The investigation lasted for approximately six weeks and involved 97 freshmen from a computer programming class. According to the results, 92% of the students used the study support system during the research period, all of whom reported that it resulted in an improved understanding of lectures. It was also found that, due to the study system, students were enthusiastic about the weekly mini-exam conducted for review purposes and displayed a high rate of knowledge retention. The results indicate that this system contributes to improving students’ motivation for and understanding of class content.
