Inter-layer correlation in a feed-forward network with intra-layer common noise

(in English) Intra-layer common noise leads to the synchronous firing of neurons in a feed-forward network.
The synchronous firing propagates thorough the network, which is characterized by correlated neural activity.
Previous studies have recently studied the spike correlation between neurons of one layer, which is called intra-layer correlation.
However, the intra-layer common noise appears to generate not only the intra-layer correlation but also an inter-layer correlation, a spike correlation between different layers.
This is because propagating synchronous firing takes over the state of previous layers and the firing states of different layers are dependent.
In this study, we construct a theory of the inter-layer correlation in a homogeneous feed-forward network with intra-layer common noise.
The theory reveals that the inter-layer common noise causes not only the intra-layer correlation but also the inter-layer correlation,
which coincide with those of a simulation.
