Analysis of locomotion and hippocampal EEG of mice in virtual environment

(in English) We have developed an immersive virtual reality system for mice. By using this system, we recorded locomotion activity of free-moving mice in an infinite wide virtual world. It was found that shape of trajectory of locomotion was strongly dependent on the kinematic parameters of a spherical treadmill that was used to measure the locomotion activity. After adjusting the kinematic parameters of the treadmill properly, locomotion and hippocampal EEG were simultaneously recorded. It was confirmed that the power spectral density of EEG changed strongly dependent on behavior of the mice which was similar to that observed in mice freely behaving in real world. In addition, we found that similar to the case in the real world, the frequency of hippocampal theta EEG was correlated with the locomotion speed in the virtual world.
