Representations of Overt Speech and Covert Speech in Language Areas

(in English) In previous studies, spatial distribution of brain activity evoked by overt speech and covert speech was investigated using fMRI; it has been found that cerebral cortices activated by overt speech correspond approximately to that of covert speech. It is, however, unknown whether the cortices serve a similar function at time of overt speech and at time of covert speech. This is because the previous studies focused on investigating spatial distribution of brain activity, and in the cortices, differences between patterns of response of overt speech and covert speech were not estimated. In this study, we measured patterns of response at time of overt speech and at time of covert speech using fMRI. A comparison between patterns of response of overt speech and covert speech allows us to investigate a similarity between functions of overt speech and covert speech. The results indicated that, in the cortices activated by both overt speech and covert speech, the patterns of response of overt speech are similar to that of covert speech.
