Estimation of Molecular Orientation in Self-Assembled Monolayer

(in English) In the present study, we propose the orientation analysis of self-assembled monolayers, SAMs, using water droplet sliding angle, WDSA, and water droplet shape, WDS. In our measurement system, the sample stage can be simultaneously tilted and rotated from 0 to 90 and from 0 to 360 degrees, respectively. The WDSAs of the dodecyl-, hexadecyl-, and eicosyl-SAMs considerably and periodically changed with the in-plane rotation angle. The WDS of the hexadecyl-SAM was also dependent on the in-plane rotation angle. Such dynamic analysis using the water droplet may be utilized to estimate not only the molecular orientation but also the domain size in the SAMs.
