[Panel Discussion] Considering BMI rehabilitation techniques based on computational neuroanatomy of motor control
Jun Izawa (ATR) MBE2012-68 NC2012-83
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) What people expect for brain science is contribution for functional development and recovery. Just a collection of individual reports of disconnected data alone can’t achieve this goal. Rather, brain since is required to be expand its boundary including areas of engineering science beyond pure science. To this end, we would use tools and languages used in the field of engineering in order to model computational mechanism of each area in the brain, which enables us to predict how the behaviors would be changed by the modulated parameters embedded in each computational process of the corresponding brain region. We call this approach as “computational neuroanatomy of motor control” and potentially being useful to understand how lesions might cause motor impairments and ataxia. If we can modulate parameters in these computational mechanism using techniques in brain machine interface(BMI) as well as neurofeedback, we might be able to predict how these modulation leads to improve and recover brain functions.
