Mere Exposure Effect Reflected in Gamma Oscillation -- An EEG study --

(in English) The current study investigated positive attitude towards stimuli caused by the mere exposure effect (MEE) by employing electroencephalographic approach. According to behavioral data, participants were divided into group with MEE and without MEE tendency. In participants with MEE tendency, gamma activity (40-60[Hz]) for exposed faces was significantly weaker than unexposed faces, indicating repetition suppression effect in parieto-occipital area. Furthermore, gamma activity averaged over 3 channels with peak repetition suppression effect was significantly different between theoretically genuine MEE and non-MEE trials. The results suggest that the existing theories for MEE mechanism, fluency misattribution and apprehensiveness reduction, might not be exclusive.
