Comparison of information transmission between Japanese spoken and written language by computer-assisted simultaneous captioning
Miyako Kamiyama (Pegasus)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Computer-assisted simultaneous captioning conveys information to deaf and hard of hearing people by projecting the spoken words of a speaker onto a screen as written words typed in by the interpreters. How should the interpreters relay the spoken words into written words so as to convey the intent of the speaker as accurately as possible? To what extent of summarizing and rewording should be allowed? In order to examine the transmission of information in Japanese, the differences in two types of simultaneous captioning (word-to-word captioning and summarized captioning) were examined, including the comparative comments obtained by 5 deaf/hard of hearing people.
