A Consideration of Flow Translation Enabling Arbitrary Flow Definition in Flow Space Virtualization

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) For scalable accommodation of OpenFlow users (controllers and end-hosts), we proposed a flow space virtualization mechanism, which enables the users to use flow space values (packet header values) freely for flow definition and headers of data packet. Along with translating the arbitrary flow space values handled by the users to those in a physical OpenFlow network, the flow space has to be divided in per-user basis for isolation of flow processing in physical OpenFlow switches. For this flow space division, a specific packet header (e.g., MAC address in our implementation) is necessary to be managed with mapping to users. Due to the management, a physical OpenFlow switch cannot have flow entries of flow definition with a wild card of the specific packet header since such flow entries may match packets of all users. In this paper, we propose to extend the flow space virtualization mechanism for user controllers to define flow entries even with a wild card of the specific packet header. For such a flow entry setting by a user controller, our extended mechanism sets flow entries with flow definition whose specific packet header value is replaced by a value of a packet that arrives at the physical OpenFlow switch.
