DTN (Delay / Disruption Tolerant Network) recently becomes in the spotlight as a network architecture adopted for the area where network infrastructure is insufficient such as disaster-affected area. DTN achieves message delivery by means of node mobility if network is partly disconnected, however, the use of node mobility increases messaging delay. We focus on ferry-assisted DTN because special node called ``ferry'' improves the performance of message delivery. Although the ferry's mobility and its interaction are the key factors to improve messaging performance, there are few researches to clarify major factors to effect on it.
In this paper we investigate the relationship between the ferry's mobility and messaging performance in DTN system. From the perspective of both area division and interaction with other ferries, we introduce four mobility models with their mathematical analysis to estimate average messaging delay. We confirmed with computational simulation that mathematical analysis fits to the simulation results well. In addition, it is found that interaction with multiple ferries improves the messaging delay. |
