Improvement of receiver sensitivity and elongation of measurement range in double-pulse BOTDR

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The receiver sensitivity of the double-pulse BOTDR was improved by 7 dB by shifting frequency band for the Brillouin scattered light detection from a microwave band around 11 GHz to the baseband. Thanks to this improvement, the measurement range was extended from several tens meters to 2 km. We achieved one-end access distributed Brillouin frequency shift measurement with a spatial resolution of 20 cm and an error (σ) of 0.50 MHz over a 2-km long fiber. The measurement range is limited by the self-phase modulation the double-pulsed light suffers in the fiber, and its further extension is possible by improving the pulse waveform.
