Bilateral Filtering based depth image correction consistent with color image captured by Kinect

(in English) There exists a calibration method that modifies depth and color images captured by Kinect so as to minimize the 2D geometric inconsistencies. However, the resulting image pairs still have small 2D allocation error. Furthermore, the distance measurement may fail due to weak reflections at dark area, specular reflections, infra-red light occlusion observed near occluding contour, and so on. Under these geometric inconsistency and lack of depth information, re-projection of the color image projected depth map to different screen may produce heavily distorted image. This report presents a depth image correction method using local relationship between depth and color information, i.e., spatially near and similar-color pixels should have similar depth. For this computation, bilateral filtering best fits, where the product of color-similarity and spatial proximity represents the weight of the depth information. Through some experiments, we confirmed that our method produces accurately allocated and lack free depth images.
