So far we have developed a novel methodology called dynamic sound scattering method. The technique is based on the self-correlation function approach, which enables us to measure the diameter of microparticles and to investigate stability of suspensions. Suspensions of hydrophobic polystyrene with surfactants were investigated in the previous studies. Because the particles are much thicker than typical electrical double layers, the effects of surface charges on the standard deviation of sedimentation velocity have been not taken in account. In this study, we investigate the system where both the hydrodynamic and electrostatic interactions play an important role in the particle setting dynamics. As the result, it was found that the standard deviation of the velocity significantly differs from the existing theory without electrostatic interactions. On the contrary, the theory well reproduces the experimental results when salts are added to the system to screen the electrostatic interaction. |
