Remote Table Talk System Using Augmented Reality Technology

(in English) Recently the number of single elderly people, hospital inpatients, and children with two working parents is increasing, and more people are eating alone in Japan. Our aim is to construct remote table talk system in which the remote users feel as if they sit around the same table, eat something, and talk with each other. Facial pose and gaze direction are important in multiparty conversations. Therefore we have constructed the remote communication system, which can exchange the facial pose information and is enough small to be usable at home or hospital room. In the system the Xtion on the table can get the color and depth data of the user A's upper body, and the system sends it to the remote user B's computer through the network. The remote user B wears head mounted display with a camera, and sees the scene captured with the camera. And the system receives the color and depth data of the user A's upper body, reconstructs the user A's 3D body, and composes it over the user B's view displayed in the head mounted display. And the system can detect the user's facial pose using gyro, acceleration, and magnetic field sensors, and display the remote user A in the right position and direction. The evaluation experiment showed that our system can exchange the facial pose information better than the existing video chat system, and the number of simultaneous speech is less in our system than the existing system.
