Performance Comparison of CSMA/CA and TDMA on Data Collection over AMI Multihop Wireless Networks

(in English) Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) will play an integral role in future smart grid, which is expected to modernize existing electric power supply infrastructure. AMI has a hierarchical structure, and we focus on the part called Neighborhood Area Network (NAN), where communications between household smart meters and electric power company's gateways are conducted. Multihop wireless communication is suited for NAN, and TDMA and CSMA/CA are possible candidates for the media access control. Then, we conduct a performance comparison of the two on periodical data collection from many smart meters to one gateway over multihop wireless networks. Our simulation results show the sustainable range of the two protocols concerning the density of smart meters and data collection frequency, in terms of two performance measures, successful packet transmission rate and throughput.
