Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Onomatopoetic words depict various types of sensations such as sounds, actions, and textures. An interesting property of onomatopoetic words is that several words can be used beyond multiple sensory modalities. However, it seems unclear whether young children, like adults, understand its crossmodal correspondences. In this study, we examined to what degrees Japanese 4-year-old children understand visual and tactile expressions of onomatopoeia, using crossmodal matching tasks. The results showed that the children correctly performed the audio-visual and the audio-tactile matching tasks concerning onomatopoeias, respectively. Moreover, most of the children passed both tasks. In addition, the scores of each task were significantly correlated with age, vocabulary size and mothers’ linguistic input. These results suggest that 4-yaer-old children have already understood visual, tactile and crossmodal expressions of onomatopoeia and they increasingly elaborate their understanding around this age.
