Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recently, millimeter-wave and terahertz-wave (> 100 GHz) range signals become important for next-generation large-capacity communication systems, remote sensing, spectroscopy, and so on. However, a technology for converting these signals to optical signals remains a challenging issue. We have proposed a new wireless-light signal converter operated with 100 GHz-band wireless signals, utilizing meta-material coupled split-ring resonator (C-SRR) structure for modulation electrodes. The effective modulation for over 100 GHz is expected utilizing the specific resonance of the meta-material structure, “zeroth-order resonance.” We demonstrated meta-material structure-based optical modulation at ~100 GHz successfully. The measured bandwidth was ~4.9 GHz and modulation index was ~3 mrad with 10 dBm wireless signal irradiation. The modulation frequency of this device can be tuned easily by changing SRR parameters. Therefore, this device is expected to operate with over 100 GHz signals. In this paper, we report about the operational principle, designing, fabrication and experimental demonstration in detail.
