Imaging of plate thinning shapes using guided waves

(in English) Several tomographic technologies using guided waves have been developed to detect the location and size of defects of a plate. Most of them are, however, based on empirical or statistical methods, and only few methods are partially relied on the wave theory. In this paper, an innovative method is presented for reconstructing a flaw shape of 3-D plate thinning from reflection coefficients of ultrasonic guided waves. The new inverse method is fully based on the scattering theory of guided waves in a 3-D plate. Starting with the rigorous integral expression of scattered waves by a plate thinning flaw, with the far field expression of Green’s functions and Born approximations introduced, we obtain a Fourier transform pair between the shape function of thinning flaw and reflection coefficients in frequency domain. A numerical example using reflection coefficients of the fundamental SH wave mode is illustrated to show the validity and effectiveness of the inverse approach.
