Scanning probe microscopes (SPMs) have been known as not only observation tools but also nanolithography ones. In particular, the mechanical scratching using SPMs is one of powerful methods for the modification of surfaces on the nanometer scale. We have already reported that it is possible to perform sub-20-nm scratch nanolithography on Si with a diamond-coated tip by precisely tuning the scan parameters. Hence, it is expected that one can easily fabricate graphene nanostructures by SPM scratching. In this report, we explore the possibility of performing the nanolithography of exfoliated multilayer graphene surfaces using SPM scratching. Graphene films were prepared by using mechanical exfoliation of pyrolytic graphite sheet (PGS), which is commercially available from an industrial materials company, and were deposited on SiO2/Si substrate with approximately 760 nm thermally grown oxide. The thickness of the multilayer graphenes was 30-100 nm. The scratch experiments were carried out in ambient conditions, with a commercially available diamond-coated tip with a nominal radius of curvature of 100-200 nm and a cantilever spring constant of 46 N/m. Several different forces ranging from 5 to 19 μN were applied with the scan speed of 10-1 μm/s. Grooves with the width of 20-100 nm and the depth of 1-25 nm were obtained with the normal applied forces above 10 μN. However, no grooves were formed with the forces blow 10 μN. The results indicate that the threshold force, which is the minimum applied normal load needed for scratching the graphene surfaces, is about 8-10 μN. In addition, the size of the grooves no longer depends on the scan speed and the scratch angle. It is suggested that one can easily and quickly obtain more complicated graphene nanostructures using the SPM scratching. These results imply that the SPM scratching could be a key technique for the fabrication of nanoscale graphene devices. |
