Birefringence of Bragg fiber due to elliptical deformation of cross-section

(in English) This article provides a birefringence of a Bragg fiber for the HE11 mode due to elliptical deformation of its cross-section. The elliptical deformation is treated as a perturbation from the Bragg fiber with perfectly circular cross-section. We obtain perturbative solutions using coupled mode equations. An approximate expression of birefringence is formulated and is evaluated by comparison of numerical analysis. It is revealed that (1) Approximate analyses secure a high-accuracy. (2) Birefringence is not so affected by the number of cladding-layer pairs. (3) Birefringence roughly increases linearly to the ellipticity of cross-section. (4) Birefringence is seriously affected by the refractive index difference between core and cladding, and a core radius.
