A Study of Energy Efficiency in Distributed Antenna Network

(in English) In the conventional centralized antenna network (CAN), whose antennas are centralized at the center of the wireless cell, the spectral efficiency decreases because the received signal power near the cell edge becomes low due to distance-dependent path loss. To solve this problem, distributed antenna network (DAN), in which antennas are spatially distributed over the wireless cell, is attracting much attention. In DAN, since some antennas can always be visible from a mobile terminal with a high probability, the received signal power improves over the entire cell and hence, the spectral efficiency at the cell edge improves. In general, the transmit power to satisfy the required transmission quality should be increased in proportion to the data rate. However, since the energy resource is limited, efficient use of energy resource is demanded in wireless networks. DAN can achieve higher energy efficiency because it can reduce the transmit power compared to CAN by narrowing the distance between mobile terminal and antenna. In this paper, we evaluate, by Monte Carlo numerical computation method, the energy efficiency of downlink DAN and compare it to that of CAN.
