Packet transfer procedure in a virtual single cell over connected small cells

(in English) The virtual single cell here means a group of adjacent cells connected with PON (Passive Optical Network) as a back haul network, where packet frames are casted to all cells in each virtual single cell to make it behave as a single cell. This paper compares benefits of two types of packet transfer protocols, contention method and polling method in the virtual single cell. In case that packet transfer sequence is synchronized between cells in each virtual single cell, effective data transfer speed decrease due to the conversation through PON. Polling method can avoid the synchronization though the contention method necessarily needs the synchronization conversation. Polling method requires less radio resources for each packet transfer than contention method. The defined virtual single cell can follow the move of mobile terminals to allow the seamless packet transfer in spite the frequent handover of the small cells.
