An ordinary scattering matrix (or S matrix) for an n-port is defined using an n x n each diagonal element of which is the reference impedance for the corresponding port. Use of such an S matrix is appropriate if every port is fed, for example, through a coaxial cable and the coupling among the ports is negligible. If, however, some of the ports are driven through a coupled transmission line having a nondiagonal characteristic impedance matrix, it is most natural to use it as the reference impedance matrix for the port bundle. In that case, the reference impedance matrix for the n-port also becomes nondiagonal. How the definition of S matrices can be extended to accommodate nondiagonal reference impedance matrices is described. Possible applications of such S matrices include formulation of multiport vector network analyzer calibration algorithms. |
