Wide-Area Pedestrian Traffic Measurement by Flow Estimation across Foreground Regions in Non-Overlapping Camera Views

(in English) Our goal is to develop a method for measuring pedestrian traffic in a wide area monitored by non-overlapping cameras. The proposed method measures pedestrian traffic across each pair of cameras by estimating the flows across the foreground regions disappearing from one camera view and appearing in the other camera view within a short time interval. The approach aims at resolving two problems: people in a foreground region can split and merge outside the camera view, and persons with similar appearance can lead to errors in person identification. The average errors of 0.184 persons in measuring the pedestrian traffic in an area in Osaka University Suita Campus monitored by four virtual cameras for 100 minutes have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.
