Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is one of the well-known conductive polymers that has excellent thermal stability and high conductivity. However, it is difficult to prepare thin films of PEDOT by itself. The common method of film formation is to use a composite of PEDOT with polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) to form water dispersion that can be deposited by wet-coating methods. However, the high acidity of PSS is known to cause such disadvantage as corrosion of devices. In this paper, low-molecular weight PEDOT was synthesized and its thin films were prepared by physical vapor deposition. The deposited films were optically characterized by IR spectra and UV-Vis spectra and electrically characterized by current-voltage measurement. It was found that deposited PEDOT film had good optical transparency, and its electrical conductivity was about 10-8 S cm-1. Deposited PEDOT film has been subjected to thermal annealing, which improved resistance of the films against organic solvents and also increased the electrical conductivity by 10 to 100 times. The deposited film was exposed to I2-vapor for doping, which increased the conductivity of the film to 1 S cm-1. |
