Improvement of Gradation Performance for the HDR Image Quantization with less bits

(in English) Usually, HDR (High Dynamic Range) image needs 16 bit for a pixel. It becomes very useful if 8 bit (1 byte) for a pixel is realized. However, to keep a gradation performance, an additional processing such as error diffusion or a dither is required. On the other hand, improvement methods for the gradation performance using a relation with neighbor pixels have been discussed. In this report, the threshold value offset quantization using a dither pattern for the encoding (bit reduction) processing are proposed. Also non-linear spatial filter at decoding (bit reconstruction) is discussed. The luminance images with 8 and 12 bit per pixel are used with 4bit reduction in the experiments. As the results of the experiment, it is recognized that the offset quantization and non-linear filter with optimal parameters gives good gradation and almost 2 dB better PSNR than simple quantization.
