A Study on Suppression of Self Phase Modulation by Reducing PAPR in Coherent Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Systems

(in English) One of the major drawbacks of coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) is the nonlinear impairment in the fiber transmission due to the increase in the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In this paper, we numerically study the effect of PAPR reduction schemes, the level clipping and the selected mapping, on the nonlinear impairment by the self-phase modulation (SPM) in CO-OFDM systems. When using the level clipping, the effect of initial waveform distortion could overwhelm the effect of the SPM. Meanwhile, the selected mapping could improve the error vector magnitude in percentage by several points, though the effect would be limited. We conclude that both schemes could not significantly suppress the effect of SPM given the condition in this paper.
