Development of Eye Input Device for Severely Disabled People Adapting to the Pupil Shape Deformation Caused by the Eyelid Occlusion

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Eye input devices are used for the purpose of communication supporting for the disabled people. The previous eye input devices are controlled by the positional information of pupil or the gaze direction. However, the input device by the positional information of pupil is usually operated by combining the head movement. On the other hands, the eye gaze input device without the head movement is burdensome in operation because the calibration of the gaze direction is required. In this study, we developed a novel eye input device which operated the cursor of a personal computer by only eye movement without head movement, in order to develop the communication tool for severely disabled people, e.g. amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In order to adapt to the pupil occlusion problem by the upper eyelid during the course of pupil detection, cross type of template matching which was robust to pupil shape changes was introduced. Further, the automatic determination method of optimal binarization threshold was devised by minimizing the number of the pupil classes through changing the binarization threshold step by step. In order to evaluate the detection performance, the pupil detection experiments were performed in 9 gaze directions using normal subjects. In results, the detection rates of pupil were over 90% in all gaze directions. The proposed cursor control method used the relative information, i.e. the length and direction connecting from the reference point to the center position of pupil, thus eliminated the calibration both for the gaze direction and head movement. Therefore, the proposed system allows users to control the cursor of personal computer using eye movement alone without calibration.
